Secret to the completion of faith

“Indeed there has come to you a Noble Messenger from among you – your falling into hardship aggrieves him, most concerned for your well being, for the Muslims most compassionate, most merciful.” [Qur’an 9:128]

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr radiAllaah anhu relates that the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam once recited the saying of Allaah ‘azza wa jall regarding [the dua of] Ibraahiym alayhis salaam, “My Lord! They have misguided many of mankind. If anyone follows me, he is with me; but if anyone disobeys me, You are Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful,” as well as the saying of ‘Isa alayhis salaam, “If You punish them, they are Your slaves. If you forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.” He then raised his hands and implored, “O Allaah! My Ummah, my Ummah!” And he cried.

Allaah ‘azza wa jall then said, “O Jibra’il, go to Muhammad salAllaahu alayhi wasallam – and your Lord is most knowledgeable [regarding all this] – and ask him, ‘What causes you to weep?‘” So Jibra’il alayhis salaam came to him and asked him. The Messenger of Allaah salAllaahu alayhi wasallam then informed him of what he had said – while he already was aware of that. Allaah then said, “O Jibra’il, go to Muhammad salAllaahu alayhi wasallam and tell him, ‘Indeed, We will please you regarding your Ummah, and We will not cause you to grieve.'”

This hadith is in conformity with the saying of Allaah ‘azza wa jall, “And soon will your Lord give you so that you shall be well pleased.”

Think about this my dear sisters. On the day of Qiyamah, what is it that would please me and you? If we alone were to be saved from the fear on the Day of Qiyyamah, that would be enough to make us ecstatic. We would not even think, let alone care for anything else. On that day, our mothers and best friends will be contemplating and busy in their own sorrows and will have no time for others. But the Messenger of Allaah salAllaahi alayhi wasallam, what about him salAllaahu alayhi wasallam. Subhaan Allaah! He was and is completely selfless, for his happiness and contentment lies not in him being granted safety, but rather in our salvation. His happiness is tied to ours. If we are saved from torment, that is what pleases him; and if we are punished, that is what grieves and saddens him. May we be sacrificed for him and may endless and choicest peace and blessings be upon him.

The Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam said: “None of you believes (truly), till I am dearer to you than his father, his child and all mankind”

Love for the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam is a measure of one’s imaan (faith and inner conviction) and our imaan is completed and perfected only when our love for the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam exceeds our love for everything else in this world, including our own lives.

The best of believers, the Sahaba (companions of the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam) showed that imaan and love for the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam are intertwined, Hadhrat ‘Ali radiAllaah anhu, speaking on behalf of all the community of the companions in Madinah, is reported to have said: “The Holy Prophet is dearer to us than our wealth, our children, our fathers, our forefathers, our mothers and cool water at the time of severe thirst.”

In another narration we see the glad tidings and ultimate attainment of salvation one achieves, solely through having sincere love for Allaah and the Messenger salAllaahu alayhi wasallam. A man asked the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam about the Hour (Day of Judgment) saying, “When will the Hour be?” The Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam said, “What have you prepared for it?” The man said, “Nothing, except that I love Allaah and His Apostle.” The Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam said, “You will be with those whom you love.” We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam (i.e., “You will be with those whom you love.”) Therefore, I love the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them though my deeds are not similar to theirs.”

The books of Hadith are numerous and are too vast to show how beautiful it is to have love for the greatest of all creation, salAllaahu alayhi wasallam. One of the blessed companions said: “I emigrated to the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam and went to him and said, ‘Messenger of Allaah, give me your hand.’ So he gave me his hand. I said, ‘Messenger of Allaah, I love you.’ He said, ‘A man is with the one he loves.'”

Sayyiduna ‘Ali radiAllaah anhu narrated: I came forth with the Prophet salAllaahi alayhi wasallam through the surroundings of Makkah. Every rock and tree welcomed him, saying, “Peace be on you, O Messenger of Allaah.” We see how trees and innate objects would beckon to the prospect of one glimpse towards the most beautiful of Allaah’s creation, salAllaahu alayhi wasallam. He salAllaahu alayhi wasallam would show love to all of the creation of Allaah, since he salAllaahu alayhi wasallam is a Mercy to all of creation and is the biggest Bounty Allaah has bestowed the believers with.

Allaah’s Messenger salAllaahu alayhi wasallam has beautifully said: “The people most loved by me from amongst my Ummah would be those who would come after me but everyone amongst them would have the keenest desire to catch a glimpse of me even at the cost of his family and wealth.”

O people who weep in yearning for the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam a tree weeped for him and He salAllaahu alayhi wasallam walked down from the minbar whilst delivering jummu’ah khutbah just to comfort the tree. Don’t you think that for his blessed followers who weep for him out of love for him salAllaahu alayhi wasallam, don’t you think he salAllaahu alayhi wasallam would come to comfort you? Recite salawat in abundance, send peace, blessings and salutations in abundance upon the best of all creation salAllaahu alayhi wasallam, and watch your trials and difficulties become blessings. Have this desire every night that today you will see the beloved salAllaahu alayhi wasallam, sleep upon sending durood, spend you days and nights immersed in his salAllaahu alayhi wasallam love and eventually you will be graced by the most beautiful of sights.

Look at this love. The Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam loved us soo much that when we hear the word Ummathi it should strike our hearts. Why? Because Ummathi is not just a word it has an ocean of meaning behind it, an ocean of deep feeling and love that the Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam had for us, the nights our beloved Prophet salAllaahu alayhi wasallam conversed with his Lord crying for us, praying for us to such an extent that their blessed and most beautiful of feet started to swell.

Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Rida Khan radiAllaah anhu beautifully said: “By the grace of Almighty Allaah, if my heart split up into two parts – on one of them you would see “Laa illaha illAllaah” and on the other “Muhammadur RasoolAllaah.”

May Allaah Almighty allow us to love His Beloved salAllaahu alayhi wasallam as has been demonstrated above. May our mothers and fathers be sacrificed upon our beloved salAllaahu alayhi wasallam.
